Texas is full of charming bakeries, but sometimes any old dessert just won't do. For those days when you need a sweet treat fit for royalty, venture to this incredibly special place hiding in the tiny town of Bellville. With a population of just over 4,000, you'd never expect such a sleepy community to be home to a majestic Medieval castle — but it is indeed, and there's a bakery associated with it that offers pastries so delicious, your taste buds will feel as if they rule the kingdom. This castle bakery in Texas is truly magical.
The castle features a moat, working drawbridge with an accompanying portcullis, chapel, five turrets, courtyard, and central keep that provides a striking view of the surrounding landscape. A massive perimeter wall ensures your safety from encroaching invaders.
Meet at the bakery by 10:30 a.m. on the day of your tour and enjoy a steaming cup of coffee + homemade pastries before setting off. Being king or queen for a day means you need to eat like one! The bakery itself is located in town with the castle just a few miles away.
For more than 33 years, this charming cafe has been proudly serving the Bellville community. Donuts, quiche, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and pigs-in-a-blanket are made fresh daily, as well as full country-style breakfasts and hot lunches.
The castle itself was built by Mike Newman in 1998 after a trip to Europe left him longing for a little piece of the English countryside here in Texas. The traditional decor and intricacies in the architecture could fool anyone into believing they've taken a time machine back to medieval times!
Nothing is merely for show — from the drawbridge to this giant catapult, all the crazy contraptions at Newman's Castle are fully functional. If a neighboring kingdom decides to go on a raid during your visit, self-defense won't be an issue!
Tours last approximately 1.5 hours, so there'll be ample time to explore every single corridor and crevice. The little ones will have an especially good time running up and down the hallways, pretending to be dukes and duchesses of Bellville.
When you're all finished, stop by the bakery again to pick up a few sweets for the road. You'll also want to hang around town a while and experience the rich history and charm this tiny community has to offer.
The castle also hosts weddings, wine tastings, birthday parties, and any other special occasion you might have. Whether you need an enchanting venue to tie the knot or just want to escape reality for a weekend, this majestic place right here in Texas can accommodate you.
Newman's Castle is located at 504 E Main St., Bellville, Texas 77418. To learn more about this enchanting destination, visit their website here.
