Just when you think you've discovered all of the hidden gems in Texas, there are more waiting to be found. After all, our state is the second-largest in the nation, so it should come as no surprise that it harbors countless secrets in the form of little-known natural wonders and other secret treasures. From non touristy things to do in Texas to hidden beautiful destinations in Texas, all of these places belong on your bucket list.

1. Cattail Marsh Wetlands Education Center, Beaumont

With over 900 acres of wetlands, more than eight miles of scenic trails, and a beautiful boardwalk, Cattail Marshis one of the best kept secrets in Texas. In addition to its stunning beauty, the marsh is also part of the wastewater treatment system for the city of Beaumont, and it provides a habitat for countless species of wildlife, from birds to alligators. This gorgeous place shows how humans are part of nature and can work with our environment for mutual benefit.

2. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, Washington

Known as "Where Texas Became Texas," Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836. Today, visitors can explore the property, which includes a replica of the building where the delegates met, plus a living history farm and a museum.

3. Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, Orange

Many people have never even heard of the town of Orange, Texas, but those who have probably know about it because of Shangri La. This pristine nature preserve is nestled on over 250 acres and parallels the Adams Bayou, allowing visitors to admire all sorts of plant and animal life. The preserve also hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

4. Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway, Quitaque

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is the lesser-known cousin of Palo Duro Canyon. Sporting those same magical red rocks, Caprock Canyons is much less crowded than Palo Duro, and it's also home to a herd of native bison. Now that's something you don't see every day!

5. Hueco Tanks State Park, El Paso

Way out in the West Texas desert lies a state park with an ancient history. Early humans came here for the rainwater that collected in natural rock basins, known as "huecos." Those people left behind gorgeous rock art, which is the main reason people visit today.

6. Big Thicket National Preserve, Kountze

The Big Thicket National Preserve is a truly incredible place. America's first national preserve, this 113,000-acre park encompasses nine different ecosystems, making it one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth. You can hike, camp, paddle, and more as you look out for over 1,300 different plant species.

7. Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center

You'll think you've entered a tropical paradise when you visit Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center. Tucked away in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, this lush sanctuary features a waterfall, a grotto, savannah trails, and more. Please note that visits are by reservation only.

Palmetto State Park, Gonzales

Palmetto State Park is another place that will make you swear you've left Texas. It's only an hour from Austin and San Antonio, but its tropical vegetation and multiple water sources look like something from a beautiful island.

9. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Mission

Hidden down in the Rio Grande Valley, this unique state park is home to over 350 species of birds. It's part of the World Birding Center and boasts seven miles of trails (one of which is wheelchair-accessible). No cars are allowed in the park, adding to its peacefulness.

10. Brazos Bend State Park, Needville

Although it's less than an hour from downtown Houston, Brazos Bend State Park has more wildlife than almost any other state park in Texas. The park is especially known for its significant alligator population, so if you've always wanted to see one in person (from a safe distance, of course), this is your chance. Plus, there are nearly 40 miles of trails to explore!

11. Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, Marble Falls

If I could only use one word to describe Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, it would be "magical." I first visited this park when I was a teenager and instantly fell in love with its unfathomable vastness and quietude. The scenery is otherworldly, wildlife plentiful, and experience unforgettable.
