Boykin Springs and Caney Creek Recreation Areas are both located within the lush, beautiful Angelina National Forest, and each one has unique amenities that cater to different needs. Whether you’re looking to swim, boat, fish, or hike, this Piney Woods oasis is a nature lover’s dream and one of the best places to go camping in Texas. No matter what season it is, you really can’t beat a trip here.

Angelina National Forest is, to me, one of Texas' greatest "unsung heroes," so to speak. It's lush, vast (over 150,000 acres total!), and offers a chance to step away from the chaos of the modern world and become fully immersed in the gifts of Mother Nature.

The forest is located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas, which is part of a larger area known as the Big Thicket. It's situated around the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and features several hiking trails and campgrounds for visitors to enjoy.

Visitors have two options when it comes to developed campgrounds: Boykin Springs and Caney Creek. I can only speak to Boykin Springs because I haven't been to Caney Creek, but I think it's safe to say Boykin is the more popular of the two.

The campground at Boykin Springs is split into two separate areas, and both tents and RVs are permitted. It's open year-round and flush toilets and hot showers are available. There are 17 total sites.

Those staying at Boykin Springs will have a blast exploring the area. I highly recommend hiking to the Aldridge Sawmill, which closed in 1910 but still remains (somewhat) standing.

Boykin Springs guests also have access to a swimming area, which is located near the entrance to the campground. It is a bit of a walk, but the payoff is so worth it.

There are fewer available photos of Caney Creek, but it actually has more campsites. It also has a boat ramp (whereas Boykin Springs does not), so if you're looking to do some sailing, this is your best bet.

The only downside to Caney Creek is that it only offers vault toilets (and no showers).
