Tennessee isn't known as "Ol' Rocky Top" for nothing. The state sits on a regional stretch of limestone, and underground streams have eroded a series of cave systems beneath the surface. Most folks tend to overlook the caves for the trees - quite literally, actually - but a visit to Cumberland Caverns might just entice you to explore the state's underground. Learn all about it below!
Cumberland Caverns is located in McMinnville, Tennessee, and is known both as a national natural landmark and a regional show cave.
Visitors come for the wide range of events and experiences available, from daily walking tours to overnight camping trips. "Cumberland Caverns Live" is held in the historic "Volcano Room," and is a live music experience that's been performed underground for the last 55 years.
We'd recommend coming by for one of the cave's daily walking tours. They're held year-round, and daily tours do not require any pre-made reservations. The low-key daily tours will take visitors deep into the cave's convoluted system, where underwater pools and a series of rock formations are sure to impress.
The VIP private tours come with a private tour guide that leads more daring adventurers on challenging experiences deeper within the Cumberland Caverns. You can even sign up for a "Caveman Campout," which is an overnight adventure that requires reservations and at least 10 visitors in your group.
The stalagmites and stalactites are massive and jaw-droppingly intricate. Your tour guide at Cumberland Caverns will be able to speak to the formations within the cave, as well as its deep natural history.
The gleaming, well-lit pools illuminate natural underwater configurations that are bound to leave you in awe. Make sure to also check out the Cumberland Caverns live music calendar as well. The Volcano Room makes for some of the best natural acoustics around, and Cumberland Caverns makes sure to book a range of acts that appeal to any and all.
