There is something about abandoned places that have a distinctly creepy vibe to them. It might have something to do with being alone in a place and knowing that no one else has occupied the space for decades. Maybe it has to do with the deafening silence. If you choose to visit this haunted jail in Huntsville, Tennessee, then you very well may experience the presence of the vile criminals that have long since passed into the afterlife.
There is no mistaking the Historic Scott County Jail in Huntsville.
Towering and ominous, this former prison looks more like a creepy castle. You can almost imagine a mad scientist operating in some dark form of scientific research, or a perfect place for a ghost. The jail now is operating as a museum and guests visit every day. Some guests are just a little bit more unexpected than others, however...
The third floor, in particular, has been known to have paranormal activity.
Footsteps stomping down the hall or loud doors closing when no one else is around all seem to be commonplace in this creepy prison.
There is one prisoner that may have never left the jail.
The Ghost of Jerome Boyett still lingers in the halls. In 1933, Boyett killed the sheriff and went on the run. A mob chased him down and he was caught by the authorities. Boyett only spent eight days in the Scott County Jail before a mob broke into the prison and carried Boyett away. They lynched Boyett for his crimes and since then his spirit is said to haunt the halls of the jail's third story.
Another story of a lingering soul is that of sheriff Richard Ellis.
One night in 1925, Mr. Ellis was bringing a moonshiner to the jail when he was suddenly ambushed from behind by an unknown assailant who shot him and then fled. The man was never found and is now one of Huntsville’s greatest unsolved murders. Ellis is said to still haunt the buildings to this day, closing doors and softly singing down the halls.
You can visit the museum during the day, but when the sun goes down the paranormal investigation begins.
