Roof-to-table dining isn't just experiencing a moment, it is an all-out classic when it comes to dining in style. Tennessee is more likely to provide views of rolling hills and craggy rock formations, but in Memphis, the ever-quirky Lookout at the Pyramid just might have the best views in the state. All views are not created equal, and with downtown Memphis and the Mississippi River within sight, a dinner here is one you won't soon forget. If you're looking to celebrate with a bit of beauty on the side, then this Tennessee restaurant is the place to be.
The Memphis Pyramid is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, just outside of the Pinch District in the city’s downtown. One of the only examples of Egyptian Revival architecture in the state, the can’t-miss structure was built as an arena in 1991. The design was meant to honor Egypt, the main inspiration for the name "Memphis."
Although the pyramid has not been used as an arena in the traditional sense, as a sports or entertainment hub, since 2004, the structure has become home to Bass Pro Shops. The outdoorsy megastore operates alongside a bowling alley, hotel, restaurants, and even an archery range in the massive pyramid.
Although there is plenty to do at the Pyramid, the onsite hotel, Big Cypress Lodge, has one of the most memorable restaurants in the state: The Lookout At The Pyramid. You will have to take a ride on the tallest freestanding elevator in the United States to reach the restaurant, and the 360-views of the Memphis skyline that await are bound to impress. Just take a look at that fish tank behind the bar!
It will be difficult to recognize anything other than the massive windows and gushing natural light when you first walk into The Lookout. The restaurant is located on the 28th floor, and though it has been artfully outfitted and designed, it’s the view that really takes the cake.
The menu focuses on fish-centric components, like white river catfish served with mashed potatoes, and crab cakes topped with homemade Creole sauce. The Lookout Burger is a popular option too, made with aged cheddar, an Angus short rib blend, and served on a brioche bun. Yum! Make sure you try the garlic parmesan fries if you can. They're perfectly indulgent!
You can sit and face the skyline, or you can choose to enjoy a view of the Mississippi River. Both options are equally stunning, and sunset may be the best time to sip a martini and while away the hours.
Oh, and that glass-floored observation deck? It’s one of only a handful in the country, and you won’t want to skip it. Just make sure to keep yourself steady, friends. You can visit the Lookout At The Pyramid from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
What a gorgeous view! What an incredible place! There is no other restaurant like The Lookout in Tennessee, and though reservations are not required, they are highly recommended.
