Tram rides may feel as if they are a thing of the past, but here in Tennessee? We have the tram at Ober Gatlinburg. Yes, you can still visit, and yes the view is everything you've dreamed of. The Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway was originally built in the early 70's as a safer, more efficient way for skiers to get from the resort town to the slopes on Mount Harrison. At the time, the mountain was only accessible by skinny, winding, and often snow-covered roads.
The tram runs from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM every day and costs $13 for an adult round trip ticket. Trams leave each side every 20 minutes, meaning you'll never have to wait long to ride.
The Ober Gatlinburg cable car travels just over 2 miles from the heart of Gatlinburg to the Amusement Park and Ski area on the mountaintops above the town. The ride takes only 10 minutes, so be sure to have your camera ready!
Each tram car fits 120 passengers and offers absolutely breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding mountains of Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Seats are limited, so you may have to stand if the tram is busy.
Pro tips: trams both up and down the mountain tend to get more full as the day goes on, so we recommend going up early and coming back down at least a few hours before the tram stops running. You can also purchase discounted tickets online ahead of time, saving money and time once you get to the tram.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. South Holston Lake is shared with Virginia and is nestled into the mountains quite nicely. The first time we saw this lake was when we ended our drive on The Snake and were blown away by the natural beauty. For some fun in the sun, head to Jacobs Creek Recreation Area where you can camp and enjoy the lake.
I consider Watauga Lake to be the prettiest lake I have ever seen in my life - in Tennessee or otherwise! You can spend a day splashing around at the beach with your friends and family, take out a boat and cruise the waters, or have a sunset picnic and soak in the pristine beauty.
Boone Lake is an outlier to me because it looks more like a river than a lake, but you can’t argue with the map. Boone wraps around the mountains and found within its twists and turns are lovely places like Boone Lake Beach and Wing Deer Park.
Douglas Lake is one of the clearest lakes in Tennessee and offers a plethora of ways to enjoy it. Nothing beats a day spent on the lake whether you are paddling around, fishing, or swimming, and Douglas Lake happens to be a place perfectly suited for all of those activities. A great place to spend the night to make the most of your time at the lake is found at Anchor Down RV Resort; make sure you check it out.
The Cherokee Reservoir offers more glittering water for miles and miles. There are plenty of marinas and boat launches if you would like to get right out in the middle of this peaceful place. Panther Creek State Park is located right along the shore and also offers some incredible hiking and camping options for an extended stay by the water.
Norris Lake is known for its clean, pristine waters. The lake has two wonderful wilderness areas surrounding it and offers plenty of surprises for those who know where to look, like a rope swing and a swimming cave!
