Nashville is known for its music, but the city has recently become a place primed for Hollywood directors and A-list stars. We may be home to Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and a second home to our southern darling Reese Witherspoon, but we're beginning to draw quite a few people with our southern charm and the varied scope of our countryside. Here are seven great movies and tv shows that have filmed in Music City, alongside a shot of our lil' town. Care to go exploring?
7. The Matrix
This one is actually a bit sneaky. At the very beginning of the first Matrix movie, there is a fight on the top of a series of buildings in a hazy spot downtown. Keep an eye on that skyline - it is very clearly Nashville, circa the early 2000s. You can tell mainly because of the prominent AT&T building, known locally as the Batman building.
6. Country Strong
Country Strong really filmed all over our great city. Since a majority of the movie took place in local venues like The Stage and outside of the Ryman, you can see glimpses of the Honkytonk Highway throughout the film. It's also a treat that the nationally known and locally based country music artist, Tim McGraw, co-stars.
5. Hannah Montana: The Movie
Ah, yes. Miley Cyrus. The Tennessee native had to make an appearance at some point, folks. The Hollywood star began her life in Franklin, Tennessee and makes it well known that the Volunteer State is where her heart is. She filmed a majority of her aptly named movie in and around Nashville, which means you'll recognize quite a few of our rolling hills throughout the Disney flick.
4. Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief
This fun children's show is a romp through the mystical stories of ancient Greece, and where better to film than the Parthenon in Centennial Park? If your kids are clamoring for movie night, appease them with a film that will give you a peek into the great Parthenon replica in West Nashville. Then maybe visit...?
3. The Coal Miner's Daughter
Sissy Spacek made quite the name for herself with, "The Coal Miner's Daughter", in which she recreates the life story of nationally lauded country music singer, Loretta Lynn. The movie swept up a few Oscar's and just so happened to film in downtown Nashville - at The Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church of country music.
2. Nashville
We know this isn't a movie, but the hit show "Nashville" deserves a solid spot on our list. It invigorated local economy with new jobs as soon as the show hit airwaves back in 2012, and has continued to enthrall audiences across the United States with it's new run on CMT.
1. The Green Mile
This iconic state prison was used as a filming place of The Green Mile. Seems fitting, does it not?
What a neat list! It's always fun to see our home up on the big screen. Continue the adventure with a twilight dinner at this rooftop restaurant in Memphis - it's insanely gorgeous!
