These ruins might not be ancient, but these abandoned cabins and houses in East Tennessee are truly wonders in their own regard. The buildings have been abandoned since the early 1990s, but the history behind them is truly fascinating. And while they're tucked deep in to the hills and hollers of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, they're easier to get to than you would expect. Check it out!
The cabins used to be a part of a social club that started being built in the early 1900s. The land for the club as sold for the creation of the National Park in the 1950s, but the park service didn't renew the leases when they came up in the '90s.
The collection of houses was abandoned when the leases weren't renewed in the '90s, leaving the ghost town that you can see today. The cabins are actually on the National Register of Historic Places, which is the only thing that prevents them from being torn down.
To get to the cabins, go to the Elkmont Campground and then turn left where the sign points to the Elkmont Nature Trail. There's a parking lot right there that is close to many of the cabins and is the perfect place to park and explore.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. South Holston Lake is shared with Virginia and is nestled into the mountains quite nicely. The first time we saw this lake was when we ended our drive on The Snake and were blown away by the natural beauty. For some fun in the sun, head to Jacobs Creek Recreation Area where you can camp and enjoy the lake.
I consider Watauga Lake to be the prettiest lake I have ever seen in my life - in Tennessee or otherwise! You can spend a day splashing around at the beach with your friends and family, take out a boat and cruise the waters, or have a sunset picnic and soak in the pristine beauty.
Boone Lake is an outlier to me because it looks more like a river than a lake, but you can’t argue with the map. Boone wraps around the mountains and found within its twists and turns are lovely places like Boone Lake Beach and Wing Deer Park.
Douglas Lake is one of the clearest lakes in Tennessee and offers a plethora of ways to enjoy it. Nothing beats a day spent on the lake whether you are paddling around, fishing, or swimming, and Douglas Lake happens to be a place perfectly suited for all of those activities. A great place to spend the night to make the most of your time at the lake is found at Anchor Down RV Resort; make sure you check it out.
The Cherokee Reservoir offers more glittering water for miles and miles. There are plenty of marinas and boat launches if you would like to get right out in the middle of this peaceful place. Panther Creek State Park is located right along the shore and also offers some incredible hiking and camping options for an extended stay by the water.
Norris Lake is known for its clean, pristine waters. The lake has two wonderful wilderness areas surrounding it and offers plenty of surprises for those who know where to look, like a rope swing and a swimming cave!
