Stone Door in South Cumberland State Park is a very popular hiking trail near the center of our state.
When you arrive at the trailhead there is a very enticing sign pointing you to Laurel Falls. We highly recommend taking the quick little spur trail to this gorgeous waterfall.
The Stone Door trail is an easy 1.8-mile hike with only 170 feet of elevation gain.
The first quarter of the trail will be paved allowing wheelchair accessibility. The woods are beautiful and the trail is a nice relaxing walk. Right before the pavement ends you will arrive at your first overlook. This observation platform will give you sweeping views of the gorge below and the mountains around you. If you look carefully to the right you will see a large rock face jetting out of the trees where you can later go and explore.
The rest of the path will wind in and out of the trees on a soft sand trail. The sand is a unique part of the trail and a soft landing for each footfall as you stroll towards Stone Door.
Right before you get to Stone Door you will reach a fork in the trail and you can either go right or left to explore some high bluffs.
These jagged rocks shoot out of the mountain and perch you high above the trees. They are cool to adventure out onto and have stunning views.
Take a break and enjoy the view because this is just one of the many amazing places we have in the state of Tennessee. It is awe-inspiring and a great reward for very little effort.
Continuing on you will be greeted with Stone Door.
This cool stone staircase is cut right out of the rock with two towering walls on either side. The trail continues to a larger network of hikes throughout South Cumberland State Park.
