The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most commonly visited National Park in the United States, and it's a popular spot all year 'round. Tucked away within the craggy peaks of the mountains and deep, lush valleys is Clingmans Dome. It's not only the highest point in the mountains, but it's also the highest point in the entire state of Tennessee. If you're looking to visit, it's accessible by a quick uphill hike to one of the best views in the park. Have you been? Leave your tips and tricks in the comments below!
Clingmans Dome rises 6,643 feet above the Great Smoky Mountains, and is the highest point in the park, the state of Tennessee, and it's the third highest mountain that's east of the Mississippi River.
The Dome itself can be accessed a majority of the year, although Clingmans Dome Road closes from December 1st to March 31st in light of ice and snow.
There's a parking lot at the trailhead to the summit where you can leave your vehicle, then it's just a half mile walk up a paved roadway to the overlook.
Keep in mind that although the trail is short, it has a stark incline and is very steep. There are several benches along the way which makes it easy to catch your breath and rest.
You'll gain 332 feet on the hike!
If you're more of an avid hiker, you can access Clingmans Dome by way of the Forney Creek Trail, the Forney Ridge Trail, and even the Appalachian Trail.
Once you reach the outlook, you'll have the chance to experience 360-degree views. On a clear day, you may even see as far as 100 miles! It's pretty incredible, and entirely free.
You can learn all about Clingmans Dome with a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains official website, right here.
