The state of Tennessee is rife with natural beauty, from the magnanimity of the Great Smoky Mountains to the east to the expanse of the grand Mississippi to the west. The state is full of beautiful natural spaces, national parks and state parks, even a few natural wonders or two...and we found one. For free. Right in the heart of Spencer, Tennessee. Get your cameras ready, and put your wallets away. This is one experience that's available to everyone and makes for a magnificent memory.
Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the most visited state parks in the state, made up of more than 26,000 acres across the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau.
It's known for its rugged cascades and gorges, as well as the beautiful waterfalls and trickling streams that run throughout the park. Campers and hikers find themselves in a state of wonder, no two visits are alike.
Fall Creek Falls itself is the highest free-fall waterfall in Tennessee, and definitively the highest to the east of the Mississippi River.
It's gorgeous every month of the year, and some might argue even more beautiful during the chilly months of winter. There's just something magical about the look of ice and snow amidst such a grand, natural wonder.
When the waterflow is high, Coon Creek Falls, shown to the right of Fall Creek Falls in the photo above, is also active. Both waterfalls share a stunning plunge pool.
The park itself is open 24 hours a day, but keep in mind that the road that leads to Fall Creek Falls is locked once the sun sets. If you're looking to hike, you can leave your car in the Fall Creek Falls parking area for the short walk to the falls during the day.
