Sometimes it can be hard to experience the great wonders of Tennessee on your own, so the internet steps up with a real solid win: unique photos of the Volunteer State from Outer Space. Yes, if you've ever wondered how those Martians, those extraterrestrials see our great state, then you can experience it for yourself below. Tennessee is beautiful no matter where you're viewing it from! Take a look, and leave your thoughts below. We'd love to hear what you think about this beautiful view of Tennessee!
1. The city of Memphis looks a bit different from high above.
Even from outer space, you can see the bend of Big Muddy as it curves its way through Memphis. It's interesting to note the darker green that colors the city's suburbs.
2. Even a local disaster can be seen from space.
Early on the morning of December 22, 2008, the wall of a containment pond in the Kingston Fossil Plant failed and released 1.3 million cubic meters of fly ash. The sludge was both heavy and devastating, spilling into the Emory River and burying almost 300 acres in the thick stuff.
3. The Mississippi floodplains that feed the state.
This photo was taken 220 miles above the state of Tennessee and depicts the watery edges of the Mississippi River as it snakes through Tennessee's agricultural fields.
4. Curious about snowfall from space?
An early snowfall on the Great Smoky Mountains was caught even from high above. Here you can see the 22 inches of snow that fell up in the heights of the National Park.
5. The fires of 2016 can be observed from space as well.
In late autumn 2016, the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains were caught in a bought of terrifically destructive wildfires that swept through the park. 14,000 people were evacuated from Gatlinburg, Tennessee as they raged uncontrolled for most of the month of November.
