Good board games and good bed and breakfasts share something in common: they will both transport you to a fantasy world. Guests in a unique La Crosse bed and breakfast can enjoy a stay that will have them dreaming of royalty – the castle-like residence has amenities fit for a king, including a well-stocked assortment of games. It’s an experience like no other: here’s what’s waiting for you at the Castle La Crosse Bed and Breakfast.
The castle was built for Wisconsin’s version of 1800s royalty: a lumber baron. Nymphus B. Holway and his wife, Jessie, commissioned the grand house in 1892
The home was built in the Queen Anne Style, with a number of Richardson Romanesque elements as well, including an imposing tower and a lot of gorgeous woodwork.

While Nymphus died before the home was complete, his widow Jessie lived in the home with their children. She held a number of community events in the home until she sold the mansion in 1920 to the Diocese of La Crosse for a bishop’s residence.
The mansion became a private home again in the 1970s and today it’s an award-winning bed and breakfast.
The castle is beautifully preserved - it’s like stepping into the 1800s. It has suites that are each named after a wood used in the home’s construction.
While the home has wireless internet, this is a place where you may want to unplug – it has a grand piano that guests may play, a fine selection of books in the home’s library and of course, plenty of games.
