While there are many great lodging options in and around Madison, there’s a wild getaway that’s better and closer than you might imagine. Lake Farm County Park is just five miles from the Wisconsin State Capitol building, but it feels a world away. It has a nice campground with everything you need for a summer escape, including a scenic lake and trails that will take you past endless summer wildflowers. Get your tent and sleeping bag ready for a fantastic weekend enjoying the great outdoors. Here’s what you need to know about this beautiful place to go camping in Wisconsin with wildflowers.
This special park in the Dane County town of Dunn has been around for about five decades, but for the last few years, it’s been named the William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park, in honor of a long-serving member of county government.
The park covers 328 acres, and it’s part of the Capital Springs Recreation Area. It’s connected to downtown Madison via the popular Capital City Trail, a paved bike and pedestrian trail. Some campers arrive by bike! What better way to feel immersed in nature already by the time you get to your campsite for the evening?
However you arrive, you’ll find some nice camping facilities waiting for you. There are 47 sites you can reserve, including 39 sites with electricity. There are also bathroom and shower facilities for campers.
Once you have your tent up, there’s a lot to explore here. The park is located right on the water. Trails skirt the shoreline and connect to a gorgeous pedestrian walkway. It's one of the best campgrounds in Wisconsin for peaceful hiking.
If you love wildflowers, you’re in for a treat. Grassy trails here wind through areas teeming with wildflowers, birds, and butterflies. Take your time and take lots of pictures!
If you don’t have time for an overnight camping trip, the park is a great day trip destination – there’s plenty of parking, and the trails are well-used but seldom crowded. Enjoy your wildflower hike!
