While you can find just about any amenity in a Wisconsin campground, some of the most beautiful camping experiences can be found in sites that are a little more rustic. In far northern Wisconsin, the Franklin Lake Recreation Area offers a remote and beautiful camping experience that’s hard to beat. It’s deep in the Wisconsin forest, and there are some really nice hiking trails that skirt glacial lakes. Pack your tent and sleeping bag: Here’s what’s waiting for you in the Franklin Lake Recreation Area.
You’ll find the Franklin Lake Recreation Area east of Eagle River, in Forest County. It’s located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
The forest is vast, covering over 1.5 million acres. It stretches accoss a big swath of northern Wisconsin, and it’s filled with endless trails and lakes.
The Franklin Lake Recreation Area is a perfect place to access the forest.
You can find it right off of Highway 70. It’s home to a 77-site campground that’s an awesome Northwoods escape.
The recreation area is home to a clear, 892-acre lake that has a pleasant sandy beach.
If you‘re an angler, you can catch walleye, northern pike, large and smallmouth bass, rock bass, perch, bluegill, and trout. The lake is open to boaters and paddlers.
The Franklin Nature Trail is an excellent way to get a sample of nature in the Northwoods.
The trail will lead you through northern hardwood, pine, and hemlock forests. Some trees here are over 400 years old!
The campground is in a beautiful setting, filled with tall pines and hemlocks, and it's located near the lake.
Each site comes complete with tables and campfire rings, perfect for cozy evenings spent under the clear northern sky.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the forest, and places like this are true treasures. Learn more about the Wisconsin campground at Franklin Lake Recreation Area on the U.S. Forest Service website. Planning a Wisconsin camping adventure? Here are some must-haves for nature lovers.
