The North Bend State Park is situated near the North Bend Rail Trail. Visitors agree that it's a lovely place to spend an afternoon. However, local legends suggest that it can get downright spooky at night.
A blind man named Ed Koons once lived near the entrance of the park.
Unhappy with his life and relationships, he is reported to have hung himself from a tree.
Visitors to the park sometimes still see the outline of his hanging body.
His ghost is sometimes seen wandering around near the lodge.
The ghost is also said to pound on the cars of teens who park their cars for romantic activity.
Another ghost is said to haunt the campground, which used to be the site of an oil well.
The oil well exploded, killing one of the workers, and blowing his body to bits. His colleagues tried to piece him back together, but never found his head.
A short time later, a man who was transporting oil workers in his wagon felt an unexpected bump, like someone climbing into the wagon. He turned around to see the headless body of a man hitching a ride, with nothing but a bloody stump where his head had been.
If that's not spooky enough, there's also a ghost that's said to haunt the Silver Run Tunnel a few miles west of Cairo on the rail trail.
The figure of a woman with dark hair, dressed in a bridal gown, appears at the entrance of the tunnel. She is thought to be the ghost of a woman who went missing after boarding the train on the way to her wedding.
When trains still ran through the tunnel, she was said to stand in the path of the train, only to disappear before being struck, or flying into the air while screaming.
