One of the best ways to spend a summer (or spring or fall or even winter!) weekend in the Mountain State is camping. There are so many campsites with so many options scattered throughout the state, but we think it's safe to say there's only one campground like the one at Compound Nature Preserve, perched right on the edge of a beautifully blue, spring-fed quarry lake!
Quarry lakes are fascinating places.
The color of the water, the rim of rock cliffs that so often characterize such places, any ruins leftover from the quarry mine...it all makes for such a beautiful combination!
But while there are several such lakes in West Virginia, they're not very common, which is why Compound Nature Preserve is such a fun find.
It's located in Kearneysville, between Martinsburg and Charles Town in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle Region.
This nature preserve is privately owned, so you do need permission to enter, but there are several ways you can get that permission to access the lake...
...one of which is to rent a campsite right on the edge of the water!
The campsites are primitive and closely spaced, but you have 100+ acres of the preserve on which to spread out and explore once you set up camp.
Hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, 4-wheeling, larping, drum circling...the options are endless!
You can also rent the preserve for events, including weddings and family reunions.
A final option is to purchase a membership to Compound Nature Preserve, allowing you to enjoy its amenities all season long!
To learn more about camping and playing at Compound Nature Preserve, visit their Airbnb page or website. And if you can't make it out that way anytime soon, you can still enjoy this footage of another nearby quarry right from the comfort of your own home!
