Hidden away just 10 miles east of Morgantown, West Virginia, is a park and campground surrounded by 16,000 acres of public forest. Free activities available to all at this hidden gem include fishing, picnicking, sledding, swimming, and hiking. Sound too good to be true? It's not!
Welcome to Chestnut Ridge Regional Park, a beautiful recreational area in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.
Featuring one of West Virginia's few year-round campgrounds, Chestnut Ridge is an excellent destination in any season, whether you plan to spend just a day or set up camp.
In the summer, the hill on the grounds is perfect for watching live music performances. In the winter, it doubles as an old-fashioned sledding hill.
Visit the old one room school house tucked away in the trees or hike on one of several park trails.
Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are also popular activities when the snow flies!
There's even a small beach for swimming in the summer and a playground perched right on the bank of one of the park's two ponds.
Take your pick of a campsite in the shade of the forest or one right on the water.
There are 40 tent sites, 10 RV sites, and 7 cabins available at the park, including a lodge that sleeps 20.
And while summer and fall are excellent times to visit, camping here in the quiet off-season, when most other campers have chosen to sleep indoors, is a chilly but rewarding experience: you'll have the lake and the forest almost to yourself.
Although the campground offers a rustic vibe, it's not completely without amenities, including an indoor recreation center and a general store to help pass the time during a rainy spell or restock supplies.
Have you visited Chestnut Ridge Park? Did you camp or just enjoy the facilities for the day? Which of their many activity options did you choose?
