The beautiful Appalachians are a system of mountains that runs from Central Alabama to the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Within this mountain range lies the vast Shenandoah Valley which is shared between the states of Virginia and West Virginia. This valley is perhaps best-known for Shenandoah National Park, a beautiful expanse renowned for, among other things, a scenic stretch of road called Skyline Drive. If you decide to visit this part of the country and want to live the high life while you're at it, there are no better places for a Shenandoah Valley getaway than these three luxurious cabins:
1. Blue Moon Log Cabin
This cabin, tucked into the woods north of Luray, has a rustic exterior but a quite modern interior. Features include a velvet sofa, hardwood floors, a vaulted ceiling, and beautiful wooden walls. The kitchen comes stocked with all the essentials, plus more: pots and pans, a coffee maker, a cheeseboard, and a variety of spices, among other things. In the bedrooms are large, queen-sized beds topped with luxury linens. Step outside and you’ll find a four-person hot tub, a front porch with several seating options, and a fire pit. This six-person cabin is within walking distance of the Shenandoah River and Shenandoah River Canoe Company - as well as a mere 20 minutes from Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and Luray Caverns. You’ll be spoiled for choices for fun activities! If you’re interested in booking the Blue Moon Log Cabin, which goes for $233 a night, check out the cabin’s Airbnb listing.
2. Shenandoah Sunsets
This cabin, located north of the aptly-named town of Shenandoah, is, as would be expected, a great place to catch the dying light of a Shenandoah Valley day. Other than watching a sunset from one of four decks, visitors can relax in the cabin’s hot tub and outdoor basket chair, play a game of foosball, roast marshmallows over the fire table (a fire pit with counter space for food), and launch a tube or go fishing from the private river access. Shenandoah Sunsets is also within roughly two hours of the sites and sounds of Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. so a day trip is well within reach. The cabin’s interior features beautiful wooden walls and floors, modern furniture, and a large marble dining room table. As with the previous cabin, this kitchen is well-equipped with all the necessary cooking devices and utensils. This forest getaway - which goes for $423 a night - sleeps nine guests and includes a "bunk-bed room" with a light-up teepee, toys, books, and reading nook for kids. 3. Maury River Treehouse
This upscale timber-frame cottage, which sits on the banks of the Maury River, is located nine miles north of the city of Lexington. This riverside retreat’s striking interior includes beautiful wooden furniture in the bedroom, exposed wooden beams below the ceiling, and stone throughout (including in the shower, backsplash, and countertops). Other unique features include a ceiling fan which resembles a farm-style windmill, a tiered staircase, and a stone walkway down to the Maury. After you’ve done some wildlife watching - look for deer, foxes, and (if you're lucky) bald eagles! - head into Lexington to walk around the campus of Washington and Lee University, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country.
Maury River Treehouse, which goes for $383 a night, fits four guests snugly on one queen bed and a blow-up mattress. If you’re interested in booking a night or two, check this cottage’s listing.
Virginia's Shenandoah Valley - with its breathtaking views and quaint small towns - is the perfect place for a getaway to your batteries while being close to nature. Whether you are cruising down Skyline Drive, taking in the wildlife on a hike, or just wandering around a colonial-era college campus, this sublime expanse will put you at ease. And what better place to come back to than a luxury forest getaway in Shenandoah Valley?
