There's nothing quite as alluring as an abandoned building. Here in Virginia, there are plenty to admire, and each has its own unique story to tell. One such site is an abandoned hotel that's situated along the New River Trail in southwestern Virginia. What once stood as a hotel for railway workers in the 1800s has since been left for nature to reclaim. And while the concept may be eerie, there's no denying the beauty of these crumbling remnants.
Take a look for yourself:
The New River Trail is a stunning 57-mile park that follows the course of a converted railway through southwestern Virginia.
Spanning four counties, the trail runs parallel to the scenic New River for 39 miles of its length.
Should you follow the trail through its entirety, you'd stumble upon a few historic buildings with ties to the railway. Perhaps the most striking example of all is the abandoned Bertha Hotel.
Dating back to the 1800s, this building used to serve as an accommodation for both railway workers and travelers.
Today, the structure barely stands yet still possesses a haunting beauty that's hard to deny. Just be sure to admire from a safe distance!
The New River Trail can be enjoyed in just about any season, but spring and summer are definitely the most popular times to visit.
The path is biker and hiker-friendly, and you'll even pass through some charming small towns along the way.
In addition to historic landmarks, you'll also have the opportunity to spot some pretty magnificent wildlife.
