The state parks in Utah offer some of the most incredible camping in the country. However, for many of these destinations, the camping season ends when the chilly weather arrives. Fortunately, in southern Utah, you will find many year-round campgrounds where you can sleep under the stars no matter the time of the year. While there are many year-round campgrounds we recommend, Gunlock State Park Campground is one to consider. It’s located in an underrated state park with red rocks and desert views all around. It’s perfect for an adventure no matter the season.
Gunlock State Park is tucked away in southern Utah, approximately 15 miles northwest of St. George. While there are outdoor opportunities galore in this park, Gunlock State Park is known for one thing — its waterfalls.
Here, you will find seasonal waterfalls that are truly breathtaking. When flowing, they create quite a gorgeous scene against the red rock. Plus, these waterfalls only make an appearance a few times each decade, making them extra special.
Gunlock State Park Campground is not fancy and you won’t find a long list of amenities. But, you will find 30 standard campsites that are open all year long.
I recommend always checking the website before you visit to learn about any closures, fire restrictions, and more.
Gunlock State Park is a wonderful destination for some time outdoors. The warm summers and mild winters make it a fabulous year-round destination and this campground is the perfect base camp for exploring.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. When I need to disconnect and enjoy some nature therapy, I hate to be surrounded by crowds. I want to be someplace quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. One place that offers all of this and much more is Swaseys Beach Campground near Green River. This campground isn’t large and it sits right along the Green River. It’s perfect for some time in Utah’s desert and you may even consider it one of the best campgrounds in Utah.

Located along Hastings Road, approximately eight miles north of Green River, is Swaseys Beach Campground. This may not be the largest or the fanciest campground in Utah but it’s perfect for some outdoors.
Here, you will find both a campground and a day-use area. The day-use area features picnic tables, metal fire rings, and a beach area where you can happily play in the water and put your toes in the sand.
I recommend you stay for a while but make sure you come early in the day. This campground only features 12 campsites. The majority of these sites are quite large and can easily accommodate large groups or families.
Keep in mind that all campsites are based on a first-come, first-serve basis and the campground can fill up on the weekends. There are no water services and cell phone reception is poor.
The campsites feature picnic tables and fire rings. Several of these campsites are also shaded with cottonwood trees.
And, of course, the proximity to the water is just one more thing to enjoy about this campground. Swim or play on the beach — it’s the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day.
Approximately eight miles north of Swaseys Beach is the Nefertiti Boat Ramp, which is a popular place to put in the water for a lazy-day float trip along the Green River.

I love the scenery of the area. The tall canyon walls, river, and desert views are simply majestic.
