Every avid camper knows a true camping experience can range from one extreme to the other, from roughing it to basking in sheer luxury. Myrtle Beach has several campgrounds with amenities that are out of this world - like water parks and go kart tracks located in campgrounds right on the beach. But perhaps there are times when you'd like to avoid the tourist crowds and find a campground in South Carolina that's a little more remote but still has some great amenities. Here's that spot:

Hickory Knob State Park in McCormick is one of South Carolina's best kept secrets and one of the most underrated state parks in the Palmetto State.

The park has standard tent, camper and RV sites as well as a lodge and duplex cabins.

And the amenities at this campground are aplenty! For starters, there's a swimming area on Lake Thurmond - and lodge/cabin "glampers" have full use of the great swimming pool.

How many campgrounds in South Carolina have their own 18-hole golf course?

Or skeet shooting?

What about an archery range? Even those glampgrounds in Myrtle Beach don't have skeet shooting and archery ranges.

The hiking trails carved into this state park are pretty fab too.

Because the park is built around a "lagoon" quietly nestled into the shores of Lake Thurmond, the trails all have amazing water views. They range in length from 1.7 miles to 7.2 miles. Want to bring your mountain bike? You can. The trails are bike friendly.

All this play time means you'll definitely work up an appetite. Settle in at the campsite for some tasty dogs cooked over an open flame....or....

...head to the lodge for an easy fill-up at their buffet-style family restaurant.

While you're there, shoot a game of pool in the lobby...

...or hit the gift shop for some keepsakes to take home.

Hickory Knob State park even has kayak and canoe rentals so you can get out on the water for the day. Enjoy the sights and a peaceful connection to nature and work on your tan as you paddle all around Lake Thurmond.

And at the end of the day, enjoy a breathtaking sunset across the water. There's enough shoreline at this state park for you to carve out your own private spot to watch the sun go down.

Then head back to your campsite and be mesmerized by a glow of another sorts until the wee hours of the morning.
