In South Carolina, visitors and residents never have to wait for Halloween to visit a haunted house - the state is teeming with so many spirits it's easy to find a haunted house, restaurant, cemetery - you name it - and there will be a haunted version somewhere. Luckily, for those who don't believe in paranormal experiences, spending the night in the following haunted inn in South Carolina is an enjoyable experience either way.
Welcome to Annie's Inn Bed and Breakfast. It was built prior to the Civil War and is located in the sprawling and beautiful countryside just outside of Aiken in the tiny unincorporated community of Montmorenci.
To understand the haunted happenings at Annie's you first have to know the fascinating history behind this old mansion.
It's here, some eight miles west-southwest of Aiken that, during the Civil War, a fairly large skirmish occurred between the North and the South.
During that battle, the Union troops barricaded themselves in the then three-story antebellum mansion, taking over the entire property. When the Confederates were engaged in their fight to force out the Union soldiers, a cannonball took out the entire third floor of what is now Annie's Inn. That floor, which had housed the live-in help, was never rebuilt.
After the war, a doctor purchased and moved into the mansion in the latter part of the 1800s.
He used the entire second floor as a hospital — and as you can imagine, health care being what it was in those days, people died here. We couldn't locate any official reports as to how MANY people.
Fast forward to 1984, when Annie's Inn Bed and Breakfast opened.
The charming old mansion offers a delightful experience and a step back in time to a grand old era. The high ceilings and beautiful furnishings provide a cozy and lush atmosphere.
Upstairs in the former space the hospital occupied, there are now inviting guest rooms, each decorated with all of the necessities needed for a comfortable night at the B&B.
Unless, of course, you find the sounds of a giggling small girl (who isn't there) bothersome.
Many visitors report the lingering spirit of a little girl up here on the second floor. No one knows how she got trapped in the house, but speculation is that it's attached in some way to the years the structure was home to a hospital.
If you've never spent the night in a haunted house, then this could be a great place to ease your way into it.
