The Battle of Gettsyburg, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, took place just a short way from the hotel. That close proximity to the battlefield made the hotel a natural spot for a makeshift hospital.
During the war, and particularly the three-day Battle of Gettysburg, thousands of injured and dying soldiers came to the hotel, cared for by teams of doctors and nurses. One nurse, in particular, still wanders the hotel to this day.
Dressed in nursing garb from the era, Rachel desperately searches the hallways for injured soldiers. She’s also been seeing rifling through guests’ drawers and their luggage.
Many of those soldiers who were treated or who died at the makeshift hospital are said to remain to this day. Don’t be too surprised if you see a soldier dancing with a woman in the ballroom, for example.

When I was a kid -- 10 or 11, I think -- my family packed up the 1987 Volvo station wagon and drove from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Bar Harbor, Maine, stopping at several notable points of interest along the way.
We also stayed at several notable hotels along the way, including a sketchy roadside stop my brothers and I nicknamed the Bates Motel. This roadside inn (I think it might have even been called "Roadside Inn") was every bit as creepy as its namesake; suspicious dark stains, flickering lights, a damp chill to the air, and a toilet that randomly flushed made for an interesting night's sleep, and while that trip included visits to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the "big boot" in Freeport, what I remember most is our night at the Bates Motel.

The Guild House Hotel is an impeccably restored 1855 row home — a National Historic Landmark — in the heart of historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A beacon of progressive politics and unabashed feminism, the home's history is inextricably tied to American history, from women’s suffrage to labor reform.
In 1876, nearly 10 million people attend The Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Eliza Sproat Turner used the exhibition as a platform to launch "The New Century for Women," a progressive newspaper that raised awareness on women's rights and published reports on the labor conditions in local mills, stores, and factories. Turner later organized the The New Century Club, a women-run operation that provided support and opportunities for Philadelphia women.

By the time Turner died in 1903, her group had become a vital part of Philadelphia driven by some of the city’s most impressive women. The small fortune Eliza bequeathed the Guild upon her death helped the members achieve their next goal: the 1906 purchase of an 1850s Italianate row home in the heart of downtown Philly: 1307 Locust Street — the very building that now houses the Guild House Hotel.
The hotel's location was a big draw for Gibson, as was its history. "I loved the central location in the center city area - shops, good food, good coffee... safe and walkable to different areas of city," she even "casually walked by the Liberty Bell on my way home from dinner!"
