Fresh air and sunshine...that's what summer is all about! You can find plenty of both in Oregon's national forests. Walton Lake is tucked away in the Ochoco National Forest near Prineville, and it offers plenty of recreation and scenic beauty.
Surround yourself with the natural beauty of the Ochoco National Forest when you visit Watson Lake. It's a peaceful, quiet place with plenty of recreation opportunities.
This lake and its campground are pretty remote, and not as popular as other spots around the state, so if you're looking for a place to get away from it all, this might be a good choice.
To reach Watson Lake from Prineville, take Highway 26 east to County Road 123. Proceed for eight miles, then take the junction to Forest Service Road 22. Drive for another seven miles to the campground.
The rustic campground is managed by the Forest Service. It offers 27 individual campsites, 2 accessible sites, and a group site.
Some sites are large enough to accommodate some RVs, though you won't find hookups here.
On the far side of the lake, those wishing for more privacy can hike in to the tent sites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with grill, and vault toilets are available.
No matter which site you choose, you'll be nestled in the trees right on the banks of the lake.
Make sure to bring your fishing pole! There's a small boat ramp to launch your non-motorized boat so you can cruise around the lake to see where the fish are biting.
Even if you don't fish, you'll enjoy padding around in a kayak or canoe.
During your visit, make sure to explore the area on one of the trails. The Watson Lake Trail makes a loop right around the lake.
Immerse yourself in nature's beauty as you stroll along the easy trail, which is made of compacted gravel and dirt.
You'll see all kinds of wildlife here, both in the lake, and in the surrounding forest.
Please note that part of this trail is currently inaccessible to the public due to some diseased trees that pose safety hazards.
After fishing, paddling, and hiking, return to your campsite to relax and bask in the sun!
The campground at Watson Lake has some sites that are available to reserve up to six months in advance. Others are first come, first served. Sites are just $15 per night.
