You don't have to go far to find a scenic camping wonderland when you live in Portland. Located in the Mt. Hood National Forest, this is a quiet 57-site campground. Fishing and mountain biking here are great, and reservable sites allow you to plan ahead, a must for this popular spot.
Situated at 3,000 feet up Mt Hood, this 148-site campground is pristine and peaceful. Rent paddle boards, canoes or a fishing boat to make your stay memorable.
Located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Beacon Rock State Park offers 26 tent sites and features a huge namesake rock with a 1-mile trail that leads to stunning views of the gorge.
Situated on the banks of the Sandy River, this park is great for swimming, rafting and kayaking. A total of 67 tent and RV campsites line the park, which is just 25 miles from Portland.
With over 1,800 acres of forest and hills, this park, situated just 34 miles from Portland is a great escape from city life. There are over 50 year-round campsites and just as many seasonally operating ones.
In the Willamette Valley's wine country, this campground is just 30 miles from the city, and features many scenic walking and biking trails. Stop in for wine tasting at local wineries, and enjoy some of the area's rich history at the adjoining museum. The park has over 70 sites.
Be sure to take the Trail of Ten Falls for a 7-mile walk through some amazing waterfalls to fully experience this park. As Oregon's largest state park, this does not disappoint for camping with over 80 sites and 14 cabins.
Located in the Tillamook Forest, this campground on the edge of Gales Creek is a piece of heaven. With just 21 non-reservable campsites, you will be happy to get here early.
Directly off of Highway 26 on the way to Mt. Hood, this unassuming campground it situated right on the Zigzag River. Hiking, wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities abound in this reservable campground of just 15 sites operated by the Mt. Hood National Forest.
Just a few miles further up Highway 26 is Camp Creek, which offers 25 reservable campsites along the Zigzag River. The night sky in this location is incredible, and is attainable in just a short drive from Portland.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. If you haven't planned your whole summer out yet, don't fret. There are still plenty of places you can go camping this summer without a reservation. While the coast pretty much requires reservations through fall, these closer-in spots have first-come first-served spots available all summer long (unless you are trying to go during the eclipse, in which case all bets are off).
Lost Lake is a premier spot on Mt. Hood, but with only a small portion of its 148 spots reservable in advance, you have a good chance of getting a spot here. Tent sites range from $27 to $30.
This first come, first-serve campground puts you in the heart of waterfall territory. With just 17 sites, the campground is not big, but because it is not a huge draw in the gorge, you have a good chance. Sites are $15 a night.
This small campground features just 9 primitive walk-in or boat-in sites. Off the beaten path, it is a perfect escape for steelhead fishing and getting into nature. Spots are first-come, first-served and cost $10 a night.
With 21 spots spread across this prime spot, you will have plenty of privacy here. Mountain bilking and hiking are big at Gales Creek, so be sure to pull in early to secure a spot before it fills up. Spots are $10 in the loops, or $5 for walk-in sites.
You are going to have to hike into this site, but once you are there, you will have the perfect place to explore the hot springs from. Sites range from $16 to $24 per night.
Located on the southern edge of Laurance Lake in the Mt Hood National Forest, this walk-in campsite is great. 20 sites are available here and cost $16 a night.
Located on the East Fork Hood River, this wheelchair accessible campground is south on Highway 35 form Hood River in the Mt Hood National Forest. Sites are $15 per night and there are 14 non reservable sites available.
This old growth forest camping site along the Salmon River gets crowded, so plan to get there early to snag one of its 15 first-come, first-served spots. Sites are $20 per night.
