Looking to get away to a remote area...perhaps even go on an adventurous camping trip? If so, head to Black Mesa State Park & Nature Preserve and pitch a tent in one of the most remote campgrounds in the state. It's located in the Panhandle, in far northwestern Oklahoma and is home to beautiful scenery, unique topography, gorgeous hiking trails, epic night skies, and much more.
Black Mesa State Park is one of Oklahoma's most remote state parks, located along the panhandle near the New Mexico border. You'll find it near the town of Kenton, on State Highway 325.
There's nothing around for miles and miles, which makes it the perfect place for stargazing and camping.
This beautiful park covers 349 acres, and there are another 1,600 acres of protected nature preserve right next to it. You can spend an entire day exploring, hiking, and watching wildlife here.
At the end of the day, settle in at the Black Mesa State Park Campground, which is nestled right on the banks of Lake Carl Etling. There are 25 tent sites and 29 RV sites here, and they're first-come, first-served, so get there early.
But there are also other remote areas where you can pitch a tent and have no one around for miles and miles.
Imagine staring up at this gorgeous sky as you lay back in your sleeping bag. People come here from all over the country to gaze heavenward, and the annual Okie-Tex Star Party is held here every October.
Make sure that you have plenty of food, water, and supplies. The nearest town is Kenton, but with just 17 residents, there aren't any services there. The closest town with groceries and gas is Boise City, which is about 35 miles from the park.
There are also spots to park the RV, so if you would rather sleep in your camper, you can find a spot in this remote area.
