Remember the days when you were a kid and all you wanted was a tree house to stay overnight in? Today, you can revive that very dream—complete with running water, heat, air conditioning and all the necessary amenities for a good night's rest.
The best part of living this childhood dream with a sophisticated flair? You don't even have to travel out of state to do so.
Just eight miles south of Loudonville are The Mohicans, a family owned and operated business in Glenmont, Ohio that features cabins, an event center and state of the art tree houses aimed to connect you with nature and bring you back to the basics of life.
Kevin Mooney, marketing coordinator of The Mohicans and tree house designer, designed The Mohicans' newest tree house, Old Pine— which is made out of 100 percent reclaimed materials, including 100-year-old barn siding and hand hewn beams.
1) Old Pine
Old Pine is built around the only pine standing on the property and Mooney said that while these tree houses are truly impressive (complete with full bathrooms, living rooms with TVs and DVD players and kitchens with microwaves, coffeemakers, two-burner gas (or electric) cooking elements and mini refrigerators!) they're all about promoting sustainability and preserving nature.

"Our first goal really is to get people connected with nature," he said. "We’re building these tree houses that, really, are all about the trees."
Inside this particular tree house are two bedrooms—each on a different level—a full bathroom, an additional outdoor shower, a living room area and a deck with seating for two.
The White Oak tree house is suspended from white oak and hickory trees and features two bedrooms (one with two queen-sized beds!) a kitchen area, a living room area, a full bathroom, an additional outdoor shower and a deck with seating for four. This particular tree house is ideal for family or friends looking to tag along with you on your adventure.

White Oak, The Mohicans' first tree house, was actually made in 2012 for Discovery Channel's series "Tree House Masters" and was designed by Pete Nelson, world renowned tree house designer and star of the show.
2) White Oak
The following year, another tree house was inspired and Little Red was constructed and featured on the show.
Little Red is ideal for a romantic, adventurous getaway and features one bedroom, a kitchen, living room area, a half bath and an outdoor shower.
3) Little Red
While the goal is to connect with nature, it's also to connect with those around you and cut out all the life noise we only think is necessary. Mooney said receiving e-mails from families expressing their gratitude for a weekend of genuine connection reminds him of what the tree houses are all about—connection with both nature and one another.

"We want people to really check out," he said. "‘Tune out and tune in.’ That’s really what’s happening here."

To me, the sacrifice of cell phone service, cable and social media appears to be well worth this one-of-a-kind adventure. Besides, it's good to indulge the inner kid in you occasionally, right? What better way to do so than an overnight stay in the trees.
If you've traveled to any extent, then you know that many "unique stays" are... well, lackluster. Fortunately, brands like Airbnb have changed the way we travel. Nowadays, unique stays are actually memorable, as many of them are old buildings with new life. Out in Fairfield County, one of the most unique stays in Ohio enjoyed a former life as a church. This Airbnb in Lancaster was built as a Lutheran congregation in 1850, and many of its historic elements are preserved to this day. How does waking up to the sun streaming through stained glass sound? Heavenly? Just wait until you step foot inside of this former church.

Welcome to the coziest accommodations in Lancaster, Ohio: an old church that's now an Airbnb.
There is so much history in this building... while it's beautiful, the stories it could tell if walls could talk are the biggest draw, in my opinion. The building started its life in 1850 as a Lutheran congregation, then became the B'Nai Israel synagogue in 1927. At the time, its rededication was huge news... 500 people attended its grand opening!
For $249 a night, its high ceilings and stained glass windows can be all yours.
This massive space is anything but claustrophobic! While the massive ceilings add an airy element to the former church, the stained glass windows infuse some color. It's easy to envision their streams of colored light illuminating the congregants who rushed into a burning building to save Torah scrolls. And yes, that really happened. This spot has a richer history than most Ohio hotels and B&Bs.
And fortunately for guests, the building's rich history is preserved in fascinating architectural elements.
Just take a look at those gorgeous Gothic peak doors! Also known as "Tudor tops," these English-inspired architectural elements hearken back to Old World religious architecture.

With two bathrooms and room for up to eight guests, this old church is spacious enough for the whole family.
Truly, this destination is a getaway the kids will never forget! In addition to being spacious, guests also love amenities like a 65-inch TV, a record player, and speedy WiFi. Outside, a firepit and barbecue grill offer the ideal space to relax.
Long-term stays are welcome here, so if you're in town for a while, you're going to love waking up to a sunrise peeking through the stained glass windows.
Forgive me for the pun, but mornings here are heavenly. And since the hosts provide extra pillows and blankets, you can really make yourself at home.

The best part? Unlike hotels, a comfortable Airbnb offers on-site laundry, a full kitchen, and other features you'll love.
You know how frustrating it is to check into a hotel and find out that they have no in-room refrigerator? Here, you'll have a fully stocked kitchen with a fridge, microwave, stove, and everything you need to cook. Plus, there's all sorts of decor throughout the home to keep you enchanted.
So if you're looking for a unique getaway that's deeply entwined with local history, you'll want to check out this Airbnb in Lancaster, Ohio.
The year this church was built, the local Fairfield County Fairgrounds were established. They're now the oldest continually operating fairgrounds in the state, and they share a founding date with this very building. It's fascinating to look around town and really process how much the world has changed around these long-standing local landmarks.
You're going to adore your stay at this historic church in Ohio.
This Airbnb in Lancaster, Ohio, is truly a memory to cherish. With spacious amenities and a vibe that can't be beat, you'll feel right at home. If only walls could talk... this historic building would have some fascinating stories to tell.
