Hocking Hills is a dream getaway for Ohio nature lovers, offering a near-endless array of incredible hiking and outdoor recreation opportunities *and* some of the most amazing accommodations in the region. But with so many wonderful cabins and resorts, picking the perfect "home base" for your vacation can be overwhelming and stressful... pretty much the *opposite* of why you head to the hills of Ohio. Enter: Getaway House. You'll find these impossibly charming tiny homes nestled in the heart of Hocking Hills, where your only neighbors will be the busy squirrels and grazing deer -- and the only "noise" will be the ambient sounds of the wind rustling through the trees and, if you're lucky, rain gently pitter-pattering on the roof.
Hocking Hills State Park is a 2,356-acre Ohio oasis of waterfalls and caves and flora and fauna. It's a destination that's on pretty much every Ohioan's "getaway" list -- but the irony is, if we all visit this extraordinary expanse, well... that doesn't seem like perhaps the most relaxing "getaway."
Luckily for Ohio adventure seekers looking for a slice of *true* R&R, there's the Getaway House.
Nestled in the stunning Appalachian foothills of the Hocking Hills of Ohio -- just an hour from our state's bustling capital city, no less! -- the Getaway House outpost in Nelsonville offers several hiking and biking trails, ample opportunities to spot wildlife, and idyllic areas for waterfront picnics along Burr Oak Lake.
There are 40 tiny-house "cabins" nestled on a nearly 100-acre expanse, but make no mistake about it: everything about the Getaway House is designed to put guests in a pure, unfiltered, unplugged state of mind...
...starting at check-in! There's a cell phone "lock box" on the property that, while not Fort Knox, serves as a gentle reminder to put the iPhone away and leave the work emails and Insta-scrolling behind... and with a cozy home and sublime surroundings, you shouldn't need much encouragement!
Of course, if leaving your four-legged friend behind has you reaching for your phone, we get it, and so do the folks at Getaway House. Doggos are welcome to the party with a flat fee of just $50.
My husband and I booked a winter getaway at the Getaway House outpost in Nelsonville, and the experience was nothing short of magical. We hadn't gotten away -- just the two of us, no dog, no kids -- since our baby moon in October 2010, and while I wouldn't recommend going so long without a couples-only vacation, our experience at Getaway House was worth the wait.
Choose a floor plan with either a queen bed or set of queen-sized bunkbeds. In addition to the uber-comfy bedding, tiny homes come with heat/AC, private bathrooms with hot showers, two-burner stoves, and, my personal favorite...
...dreamy outdoor seating and a fire pit with a s'mores kit! I can attest that there's nothing better than cozying up by the fire after a long day exploring the caves and waterfalls of Hocking Hills. The immense darkness and unprecedented quiet of a winter's night in Hocking Hills is unparalleled.
With close proximity to one of the best cities in the Midwest (hey, Columbus, Ohio!) *and* Ohio's ultimate outdoor playground, there's really, truly no better home base for your next Ohio getaway than the aptly named Getaway House.
There's also no place like home in the Buckeye State.
When was the last time you got away -- really, truly got away? Life moves at a breakneck speed, and while we're certainly grateful for the screens and technology that connects us all together, connecting with each other *and* Mother Nature is equally important.
