Did you know there's a Confederate cemetery hiding in Ohio's capital city? Most people don't. Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery was once a Confederate prison. Today, it's a historic cemetery where more than 2,000 Confederate Prisoner's of War are buried. As one of the few Civil War sites in Ohio, it's unexpected, solemn, and worth a stop the next time you find yourself in central Ohio.
Few people know that there's a Civil War cemetery in central Ohio where thousands of Confederate soldiers are buried, called Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery.

Hiding along the busy Sullivant Avenue in Columbus is a quiet, little-known cemetery that's home to some rare pieces of history.
Please note: There is no parking lot for the cemetery. Street parking is available, but you might have to park a block or two away.
In the center of the cemetery, you'll find a rock inscribed with how many soldiers are buried here, which is 2,260.
Camp Chase was established in May of 1861. The camp was much larger than the cemetery and the entrance was on the National Road, four miles west of Columbus.
Take some time to read the historical markers throughout the cemetery. You'll find some hidden gems, such as this historic cannonball.
Camp Chase was also a training camp for Ohio soldiers, a parole camp, and a muster-out post.
During its time as a Prisoner-Of-War Camp, more than 9,400 men were held at Camp Chase. Today, it's sobering to walk among the sea of graves.
