Parts of Northeast Ohio are surprisingly historic. Old-fashioned cities like Medina, for example, once enjoyed an annual parade that brought a menagerie of animals like giraffes and rhinoceroses into the city square. Bay Village was the birthplace of E. Harold Munn, a man who campaigned for the presidency under the Prohibition Party. Everywhere we turn is a unique history waiting to be uncovered; however, Oberlin is one local community that seems to hide many historical secrets. Now is your chance to stay overnight in this pretty place, surrounded by Civil War-era artifacts in what may have been a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Welcome to the historic 1830 Hallauer House Bed & Breakfast!
Located in Lorain County, Oberlin is a historic community with unique roots. This community has strong abolitionist roots and was regarded as a terminus on the Underground Railroad.
Once upon a time, thousands of runaway slaves quietly traveled through the scenic landscape on their way to freedom.
The town was planned to be an integrated community from very early on, and people of all backgrounds attended Oberlin College. Many graduates remained staunchly abolitionist, going so far as to travel through the South assisting escaped slaves.
Samuel Wightman and his family occupied what is now a B&B during the Civil War, and they're believed to have assisted those on the Underground Railroad.
The house purportedly contains a hidden room. Above it is said to be a hole that allowed the family an opportunity to provide provisions to the occupants below.
Today, the home is decorated with authentic Civil War-era artifacts and reproductions.
In the Confederate Room, guests will immediately spot a reproduction of an artilleryman uniform. Beside it is an authentic sword found buried in Tennessee.
You'll find yourself immersed in stories of Oberlin's unique history and will feel a connection to the devoted abolitionists from the area and the brave souls they helped obtain freedom.
All this, plus a complimentary three-course breakfast?! Count me in!
In the summer, the grounds surrounding the bed and breakfast are downright enchanting.
The gardens are amazingly lush and they beckon to visitors on balmy summer days.
They're just as inviting in the cooler months, too. The chilly weather leaves visitors craving a stop in the Asian Spa.
