There's no other state park in North Dakota that can say it has quite as much to see and do as this one. With the usual camping and trails along with awesome attractions like historic buildings and even the only running trolley in the state, it's full of great stuff to see and do. You'll want to set aside a family weekend for this place. Just take a look at everything it has to offer:
Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is the place in North Dakota that truly has it all. You can step back in time, into nature, and into fun when you visit it. Did you know that this is the oldest state park in the state?
The park is namely known for its historic significance. It is the original grounds of Fort Abraham Lincoln, once the residence of the famous George Armstrong Custer and his men. Today you can explore the remnants and reconstructed parts of the fort.
From barracks to towers and even Custer's house, you can see the history by taking tours of the park while you're visiting.
You can even go inside many of the buildings and get a feel for what it might have been like to be here back in the 1800s.
An old cavalry cemetery is at the park as well, adding to the history and stories behind this place.
Along with the fort and military buildings, there is another side of history at the park - one that goes back much further.
The On-A-Slant Village in the park is a recreated earth lodge village that used to be all across the prairie and were the homes of the Mandan people. Like with the other buildings at this park, you can step inside and get a taste of what life was like back then.
The list of things Fort Abraham Lincoln has doesn't end there! The park has the one and only true trolley ride in North Dakota and you might be able to catch a ride on it while you visit if it is running. It'll take you on a pleasant ride through the scenic area.
Speaking of the scenery, as a state park it also has all the outdoor recreation opportunities you'd expect. Hiking trails, many campgrounds, and cabins are all available for visitors to use. All of this is beautifully located next to the Missouri River.
There is no other state park in North Dakota - or probably anywhere - that can say they have quite this combination of things to see, do, learn from, and enjoy. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is a must see for anyone!
