When it comes to camping in the Empire State, most of the time you probably aren't picturing yourself surrounded by snow as you lean into a campfire or cozy up inside of a cabin. For many New Yorkers though, we enjoy fitting in some good old winter camping each year! Winter camping in New York is the best, and everyone should try it. Taking you out along our Southern Tier where you're not too far from our state's westernmost corner, Allegany State Park gives you options to choose from when you're planning to take this type of seasonal getaway.
Covering nearly 65,000-acres of New York, Allegany State Park is a place that turns into a magical winter wonderland each year.
The state park is so large that it's divided into two areas - the Red House Area and the Quaker Area.
Both sides of the park feature an amazing variety of outdoor activities and scenic sights to enjoy, with the park having plenty of campsites, hiking trails, and lakefront views.
And of course, you can't forget to pass by beautiful attractions within the park like the covered bridge and Thunder Rocks areas.
With so much to see and do inside of just this one park though, you're probably wondering how you can enjoy it all in just one trip - that's where camping comes in handy.
Unlike some of our other state park's, Allegany State Park remains open all year long and offers winter camping getaways.
Within the park, you'll find over 200 cabins that are available to rent out, with even 30 available cabins that are winterized during the Non-Peak season between November and June.
Featured in all different areas of the park, here you can see the Angle Trail cabins next to Quaker Run that sit right near the waterfront all while you're nestled away in the woods.
If you've never experienced a weekend away during the winter where you get to cozy up inside of a cabin and enjoy our beautiful scenery - there's no better place to visit than Allegany State Park.
Open all year long, you still have plenty of time to plan a winter camping trip to this state park before the season's over.
