If you're from out-of-state, you might know Buffalo best for its weather. From snow to wind, the city has a reputation for winter. Or, maybe you know the Queen City for its food. From wings to pizza, Buffalonians take their food seriously! One thing we can almost guarantee is that you don't know the city for its hotels. While we have many wonderful options, the rest of the world hasn't caught on... until now! TIME Magazine just released their list of top 100 places and an incredible castle hotel in Buffalo has made the list!
It can be hard to believe, but the 145-year-old building that's now home to the Hotel Henry got its start in 1880 as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane.
It's located on the Richardson Olmsted Campus, which was created by Henry Hobson Richardson, one of "The Recognized Trinity of American Architecture."
The grounds and gardens were originally created by American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City's Central Park.
Today, the Richardson Olmsted Campus is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
What might be most recognizable are the 185-foot-tall towers, which were created as decorative architectural features. Some believe that former patients were kept in the towers, but this isn't true. Today they house HVAC and platforms that allow for maintenance of the roof. How... interesting!
The Hotel Henry is a state-of-the-art hotel and conference center located in the cultural center of Buffalo.
A stay here means being with close proximity to important Buffalo iconic locations such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield Penney, Hoyt Lake, and the Elmwood Village.
The interior of the hotel is even more impressive that the outside, making TIME's choice very clear.
Inside, you'll see clean lines mixing with historic details.
There are bright and airy spaces allowing for strong natural light. This often surprises guests who are only familiar with its history as a former hospital.
The layout of the hotel and the grounds make for a sprawling area, with lots of uniquely utilized space.
The art seen throughout the Hotel Henry has been curated by Resource:Art. The hotel also has in-house galleries that are just as interesting as exploring the city itself.
