Tucked away in the town of Cimarron, New Mexico awaits a hotel that's full of intrigue. To start, it's been around since the mid-nineteenth century. And while its history is certainly impressive, it's the belief that this location is riddled with paranormal activity that truly piques the interest of guests. A night or two here and you might just spot something ghostly roaming through the hallway. Here's more on the historic St. James Hotel in New Mexico.
The St. James Hotel is one of the most iconic landmarks in Cimarron, New Mexico. With its picturesque facade and charming rooms, the hotel has been a prime destination for decades. Yet spend a night here and you might discover that this isn't a place for the faint of heart.
The building was constructed in 1872 and served as a place of entertainment for a host of famous outlaws: Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill Cody, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and more. During these rowdier days, at least 26 murders took place here.
It stands to reason that a place so historically tragic would have at least a few lingering spirits. Several accounts report all kinds of paranormal activity, including portraits falling off of the walls, doors opening mysteriously, and other objects moving on their own accord.
In fact, there's one gust room so haunted that it's kept locked. Room 18 was the site of a terrible murder, and it's believed that the ghost of Thomas James Wright still haunts the room today.
Mr. Wright had won a poker game and, after returning to the second floor with his winnings, was shot in the back just outside of his room. Today, the room is closed to the public entirely.
Stay in Room 17 and you might encounter the ghost of Mary Lambert, the second wife of the hotel's original owner. Her rose-scented perfume can be detected and some have even seen her ghost nearby.
So whether you believe this hotel to be haunted or you're simply fascinated by its history, you won't soon forget your stay at this haunted hotel in New Mexico.
