We often associate cabins with images of curling up in front of a blazing fire during the winter months. But they’re also a great accommodation choice for summer. For one thing, they tend to be in beautiful settings. For another, the rates for cabins in ski areas are often discounted at this time of year. Here are 8 cozy cabins in New Mexico to consider for your next getaway.
1. Forest Home Cabins, Ruidoso
Forest Home Cabins offers a range of cabin sizes and styles in the Upper Canyon of Ruidoso. The rustic Maid Marion cabin starts at $109 per night, whereas the Robin Hood cabin, which features a two-person hot tub and more contemporary vibe, begins at $169.
2. Story Book Cabins, Ruidoso
Alternatively, create a fairy tale vacation at Story Book Cabins, also in Ruidoso. If you're wanting a cozy feel, check out the Knotty Pine cabin which start at $129 per night. The Papa Bear cabin is spacious enough for groups of up to 12. Although prices begin at $349 per night for this cabin, that works out to roughly $30 per person.
3. Copper King Lodge, Red River
This is technically a lodge, but it has that cabin feel. Although efficiences cost $86 per night, it's worth considering an upgrade to a riverfront room ($153 in summer) so you can spend a day splashing around just outside your room. Hikers love this area for its trails and you may well find that the wildlife comes to you, with deer and bighorn sheep sometimes roaming the grounds.
4. Georgetown Cabins Resort, Silver City
The Georgetown Cabins provide a convenient base for exploring the Gila Wilderness and Gila Cliff Dwellings. Or you could just soak in the tranquil environment with that special someone. The fire pits and soaking tub make this resort ideal for a romantic getaway.
5. The Cabins at Cloudcroft, Cloudcroft
You have the best of both worlds here because, despite a secluded setting, cabins have all the amenities you could want, from tubs to fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. Small pets are allowed (for an extra fee and with some restrictions) and one-bedroom cabins begin at $129 (in July).
6. The Retreat at Angel Fire, Angel Fire
Angel Fire is located in a gorgeous part of New Mexico. Although outdoor adventures await, you may be tempted to just snuggle up with a book in one of these cabins, which are decorated in a relaxed, natural style, with furniture crafted from aspen wood. Prices for one-bedroom units start at $139. (Bear not included.)
7. Rio Colorado Cabins, Red River
Rio Colorado's 20 cabins are spread out over a five-acre property that includes a fishing pond - stocked weekly in summer. In terms of amenities, the cabins vary - for instance Cabin 18 has a wood-burning fireplace. One, two, and three-bedroom cabins are available and many are pet-friendly (additional fees apply). In terms of pricing, the rate for Cabin 2, which sleeps four, is $110 during the summer.
8. Gallina Canyon Ranch, Abiquiú
This cabin is situated in the middle of a box canyon in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. If you want a peaceful, idyllic escape, this may be the spot you're looking for. The cabin is small - sleeping one or two people - and is on the site of an old homestead and current cattle ranch. In fact, the ranch has been featured in publications such as "Better Homes and Gardens" and "Martha Stewart Living."
