If you love the outdoors like I do, it's easy to see why the North Country (or Great North Woods) region of New Hampshire is so appealing. The area is less-populated and more wild, with more opportunities for outdoor adventure than you can imagine. When I put my winter gear away, my thoughts turn to the camping season. I prefer my campsites to be quiet and remote, and, ideally, on the water. For such sites, I look to Umbagog Lake State Park in Errol, NH - it's home to amazing New Hampshire waterfront camping.
Spanning from Coos County in New Hampshire to Oxford County in Maine, Umbagog Lake is a wilderness lake of about 8,000 acres and 11 miles in length.
Umbagog Lake is one of the most pristine and beautiful lakes in the state.
Its name is derived from the Abenaki word for "shallow water."
Along its southernmost shore lies Umbagog Lake State Park.
This 1,360-acre outpost provides access to the lake and surrounding lands for swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, and hiking.
In 2022, new Adirondack-style shelters were constructed by the Student Conservation Association and the New Hampshire Conservation Corps.
For campers who are seriously interested in solitude, the park has 33 remote campsites located around the lake that are only accessible by boat.
In addition to the remote sites and the regular sites at the main park, a limited number of cabin rentals are also available.
Loons are always a treat to listen to in this part of the state while camping.
Their calls carry great distances over the open water.
An interesting fact about Umbagog Lake State Park is that it's the only park east of Michigan to be classified as Bortle 1.
This means it's a perfect spot to kick back in your camp chair for some stargazing.
Learn more about the park and book your stay today by visiting the Umbagog Lake State Park website. Reserve early to get a great campsite!
