Nebraska isn't quite as treeless as the rest of the country seems to think, but we definitely don't have all of the treehouse restaurants, hotels, and playgrounds that the more heavily-wooded states enjoy. There is one treehouse that takes visitors up to the treetops, and it's so much fun that you'll want to visit again and again.
At Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, a 50-foot-tall treehouse is tucked into the woods inside the Tree Adventure attraction. There's a charge to enter the Tree Adventure, but it comes with access to miles of walking trails, some phenomenal play areas for kids, and, of course, the big treehouse.
It's a short walk from the Tree Adventure entrance to the treehouse. You'll take Tree House Trail to get there. The way is clearly marked, so you won't have any trouble finding it. You might, however, find that it takes you longer than expected to get there because you'll be tempted to stop off and look at all of the interesting sights along the way.
You'll notice the tall wooden structure towering above you as you get closer. There's a series of platforms with wooden stairs in between. You can climb at your own pace all the way up to the observation deck at the very top.
Before you start your ascent, however, go inside the little room at ground level. There you'll find information about the surrounding farm and woodland area, wildlife, and history - there's even a little display beehive in this case on the wall!
Keep climbing and you'll get to a platform with some beautiful wooden benches. This might be a good time to sit down, relax, and enjoy the rustling of the leaves all around you. Or, just keep on going inside to another treehouse classroom. There are lots of fun things to see here, like antlers, pinned butterflies, and natural objects found in the forest.
Keep climbing just a little more to reach the observation deck. From the very top of the treehouse, you can look out over the rest of the Tree Adventure area. But be warned: if you come in summer when the foliage is full and lush, all you'll be able to see is an ocean of beautiful green leaves - not that that's a bad thing!
The Canopy Tree House observation deck sign will inform you that you're now standing at an elevation of 1044.5 feet.
You'll be five stories above the ground here. Take a few moments to catch your breath and enjoy the view before you start your trek down, because it's absolutely beautiful at the top.
Both before and after the treehouse, there are lots of other awesome activities in the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure...but the treehouse is such an unusual thing to find in Nebraska that you might find yourself spending a lot of time up there.
