The little village of Steinauer (which, if you're from around here, is pronounced "Steener") is home to one of the state's loveliest historic bed and breakfasts. It started out life as a very different type of establishment.
The Convent House Bed and Breakfast actually used to be - you guessed it - a convent.
It opened in 1932 to accompany the newly-built Catholic School, which operated until 1970. Four Benedictine Sisters lived in the convent and taught at the school. Staffing shortages forced the closure of the school in 1970. The building then cycled through periods of vacancy when it wasn't being rented by various families.
In 1993, volunteers from St. Anthony's Church, which is right across the street, dedicated themselves to restoring and improving the property.
They worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds and turn the convent into an elegant, relaxing bed and breakfast.
Today the village of Steinauer boasts a population of just 75, but the B&B has become an attraction for those looking for a unique getaway.
The interior of the Convent House is lovely, but it's not overly fussy or stuffy. In fact, it's probably exactly what you imagine when you think of a country bed and breakfast.
There are six guest rooms available, starting at $80 per night (as of the time of publication).
Each of them is decorated differently with sweet little personal touches that make every room unique. You can have a different experience every time you visit.

Five of the rooms are meant for two people each, but there is also the option of renting the entire lower level. With four beds and two reclining chairs, this big open area sleeps seven comfortably.
The shared kitchen makes it possible to prepare your own meals if you wish. Breakfast is included in your room rate, and it is absolutely delicious.
On special occasions, like Valentine's Day, the B&B hosts dinners for an extra fee. They are always tasty and it's always a memorable experience.
The volunteers who run the Convent House Bed and Breakfast are faithfully dedicated to the project. The proceeds benefit St. Anthony's, so you can feel good knowing that your relaxing vacation is benefiting the community. Find out more at the B&B's website.
