While most Montanans are more than happy to pitch a tent in the middle of nowhere and sleep under the stars, there are a surprising number who would rather not -- and yes, there are born-and-raised Montanans among them. If you love nature but also love showers and having a roof over your head, these six campgrounds offer the perfect compromise.
1. Glacier Campground, 12070 U.S. 2, West Glacier
You'll find plenty of spots for tent camping here, if that's your style. But there are also cabins for rent, an onsite store, a main building with a lounge area, showers and restrooms.
2. Madison Arm Resort & Marina, 5475 Madison Arm Road, West Yellowstone
The road to reach this campground can be a little rough, but once you reach it, you'll be in the middle of a peaceful paradise. There are several cabins and a larger cottage for rent, all equipped with refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, coffee pot, and private baths. The property rests on the shores of Hebgen Lake, so come prepared to go swimming and boating (you can rent a boat if you don't have your own).
3. North Forty Resort, 3765 Mt Highway 40 W., Columbia Falls
It might be a bit of a stretch to call this camping since the property features cabins with all the comforts of home, a glamping tent, restrooms, showers, a common recreation area and two sheltered hot tubs, but you won't find a more comfortable way to enjoy the beauty of nature.
4. Missoula KOA, 3450 Tina Ave.
KOA campgrounds tend to have more amenities than most, but the Missoula KOA has both camping cabins and deluxe cabins (which sleep 6). There's also a family fun center than includes a beautiful seasonal pool.
5. Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park, 210 S. Electric St., West Yellowstone
No RV is required to camp here, and if you'd rather not rough it, you can rent one of their cozy cabins. Amenities include free WiFi, plus bathrooms and showers.
6. Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground, 22998 Mt. Highway 83
The Swan Lake Trading Post is a fantastic place to camp, especially if you stay in one of the reasonably priced camping cabins. There's a restaurant as well as free WiFi onsite, so you can enjoy a true vacation here while still enjoying the beauty of nature.
If you fall into the category of someone who loves nature but doesn't love camping, check out these beautiful Montana glampgrounds.
