Remember how much fun it was to tell – or even to listen to – ghost stories as we sat around a roaring campfire or curled up in our sleeping bags at a sleepover, and getting so scared we couldn’t sleep? Imaginary ghost stories are definitely fun, but it’s the real ghost stories that really give us chills. Here are the spooky tales of the Hotel Bothwell, one of the most haunted hotels in Missouri, that might just make their way into your nightmares.
The Hotel Bothwell, in Sedalia, has been welcoming guests since 1927, although some have found the place so cozy and so much like home that they have just never checked out.
Cozy up for some classic Missouri ghost stories. You probably want to keep a light on.
It certainly has seen its fair share of famous visitors over the years, including Harry Truman, Bette Davis, and Clint Eastwood. However, it’s the visitors we can’t see that are the most intriguing.
While the hotel has seven floors, the majority of the paranormal activity occurs on the third floor. (If you want to experience the paranormal, you might want to request a room on this ghostly floor.)
No one knows exactly who these ghostly spirits were when they were alive, but they’re certainly making their presence known in the afterlife.
Former guests tell tales of hearing the voices of young children when none were around, and some have even caught sight of ghostly kids roaming around. You might even spot a little girl in a white dress on the third floor.
Don’t be too surprised if you hear a woman talking loudly and, when you go to investigate, you find no one there. Feel a brush against your arm as if someone is passing you, but no one’s there? It’s probably just a spirit.
That, however, is just the beginning of the paranormal occurrences. Guests tell of feeling someone sitting on their bed, of hearing footsteps running backing forth in the hall, and of doors opening and closing. But...you guessed it: No one’s there.
A former hotel employee, according to city legend, tells of getting unexplained scratches on their neck after leaving the hotel.
