Here in Minnesota, there are more than a few places where you can come face to face with history. These museums, historic sites, and old-school restaurants are full of century-old relics and fascinating stories from the past. But most of the time, visitors only spend a few short hours there. While it is difficult to immerse ourselves in days gone by for longer periods of time, it is possible. One place where it is possible - and even easy - to step back in time is at Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast in New York Mills, Minnesota. Guests have a chance to stay the night in one of four historic train cars, including an authentic 1890s railroad caboose. Here's what you need to know:
Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast is a charming stay in the northwestern Minnesota town of New York Mills. It's in Otter Tail County, Minnesota's - and the country's - most lake-filled county.
The B&B's main house is well worth staying in. Built in 1903, it has two comfortable guest rooms outfitted in beautiful antiques. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time.
Of course, many guests of the Whistle Stop come for the four train car suites on the property. Each is as charming as you would expect from a turn-of-the-century car.
The forest green Palace Car dates back to 1909. Originally a dining car for the Northern Pacific Railroad, it is now a cozy place to lay your head.
The Imperial Car is also a beautiful restoration. It dates back to 1903, when it was built to shuttle travelers between Washington and Minnesota.
The inside is decked out in period appropriate carpets, furniture, and decor. There's a comfortable bed, plenty of seating, and a dedicated bathroom. Guests have everything they need in this beautiful train car!
The bright yellow Viking Car is a favorite of guests. This car had many lives over its long history. It was once used by the U.S. Forest Service, and it's even been a diner in Deerwood, Minnesota!
Today, the restored train car stands out as one of Minnesota's most unique overnight stays. Like the other cars, it's filled with everything you need to have a cozy, comfortable stay.
The oldest train car on the property may also be the most interesting. This old caboose was built way back in 1893!
The old caboose is outfitted with a full bathroom, a Murphy bed, a fridge, and a microwave. It may be small, but it is an unforgettable stay!
A stay at Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast is a great way to spend some time in Minnesota's Lake Country. Any of the beautiful turn-of-the-century train cars is an excellent place to take in all that this region as to offer!
