If you asked me why I love traveling to remote places, it’s not always just for peace and quiet. Some of the smaller towns around Michigan offer a treat you can never get in the big cities. Looking up at the night sky to see it filled with stars from horizon to horizon is one of my most vivid memories up in Northport, Michigan.
If you took a cruise across the Grand Traverse Bay from there to the Little Traverse Bay, you’d find a tiny home rental that offers equally great stargazing opportunities. The Northern Nest is the perfect getaway for those who love starry nights and quiet vacations. This tiny home earns a big spot on our list of the most Unique Places To Stay In Michigan.
This is a beautiful year-round rental that makes for a cozy getaway in the winter and an exciting adventure in the summer. This is a tiny home, so don’t expect to cram in a ton of guests during your stay.
However, that’s what I feel makes this place such a special rental. It’s truly a slice of heaven that’s only meant for two to share.

The night sky in Michigan can get so clear when you’re near the water and away from the towns, I once saw a string of Starlink satellites drift by out of nowhere. I will admit, I thought they were aliens for a hot second.
While this is an ideal place to bundle up if you’re visiting during the winter, that doesn’t take away from its potential during the summer months. Lake Michigan is just a short drive away and there are plenty of parks and nature areas near Petoskey.

This rental might not be big, but it makes the most of every inch. This private kitchen area might seem like half of the house, and it comes with a plug-in stovetop, refrigerator, and microwave for quick meals.
My suggestion is to do most of the prep work inside but do the cooking over the fire pit.
The sleeping area will bring you above it all. Just walk up the ladder in the kitchen and you’ll find a bed nestled above the cooking space.
I could nap for hours up here while watching snowflakes harmlessly fall right behind my head.
Head out to the porch if you’re looking for a little exposure to nature. The Northern Nest is outfitted with several accessories to enjoy the outdoors.
Morning coffees won’t ever be the same after this wake-up call.
