No matter the season there's an overnight option in Maine that will provide some up-close nature time! As one of the most beautiful states in the country, it's no surprise that people from far and away to experience a few days (or more!) in the great outdoors. But, despite lots of demand, there's a good chance you'll find something perfect for you whenever you'd like. We love year-round camping, but the period between late summer and fall is perfect!
1. Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Campground, Freeport
This beauty feels far away, but sits just outside the outlets frequented by tourists in Freeport. There are more than 130 sites for tenters and you can even rent bikes, kayaks, or canoes. Prices are between $20 and $70 depending on which site you choose.
2. Duck Harbor Campground, Isle Au Haut
Have a hankering for a few nights of rustic living? This is the spot for you! There's no electricity here and cell service is limited, but you won't want any distractions anyway. This place is gorgeous and offers exactly what you might imagine of Maine coastal camping. Plan on bringing everything you need with you and make reservations ahead of time. Spots are about $20.
3. Hermit Island Campground, Phippsburg
Imagine waking up to the sound of crashing waves and the feel of early-morning seaside air. That's exactly what find by booking yourself a night or two at this beauty of a campground. Located at the far reaches of one of those craggy points on Maine's coast, this might be the most Maine campground of all.
4. Acres of Wildlife Campground, Steep Falls
If you've got a family in tow, you'll love how much there is to do at this spot in Steep Falls. While they're just 2-miles from Sebago Lake, you won't need to go anywhere to find all the fun you need. With ice cream, mini-golf, six playgrounds and boat rentals this is a wonderland for hard-to-keep entertained kids. Spots run between $30 and $80 per night.
5. Turner Farm, North Haven
For those looking for a more hands-off approach to camping head to Turner Farm and their already-constructed canvas walled tent. Inside the 2-5 person tent is a queen-size cot and outside is everything you need to cook the perfect camp dinner. Views are of the water between North Haven and Vinalhaven. One night is about $120.
6. Shin Pond Village, Mount Chase
If you're not entirely sold on the idea of sleeping on the ground and don't have access to an RV, check out this beauty of a destination. They've got space for regular camping, but also offer cottages and waterfront homes. If you love exploring nature, you'll appreciate that this spot is just 20-minutes from Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. It's been around for more than 40 years and there's plenty to do here, too.
7. Warren Island State Park, Isleboro
Offering one of the most unique camping experiences in the state, Warren Island State Park can only be reached by paddling about a quarter-mile or via the $150 water taxi from Linconville. But once you've arrived any effort will feel minimal compared to what you'll find. Gorgeous views and lots of birding await you! There are nine campsites and three Adirondack shelters for between $15 and $25.
8. Cathedral Pines Campground, Eustis
Located on the banks of Flagstaff Lake, this beautiful destination offers plenty of peace and quiet as well as things to do. There are 115 sites and nearly all of them have electric and water hookups. That means this is a great option for those who prefer RV camping. There are showers, laundry facilities and a trail system. You'll even find wifi. Sites are between $32 and $40 a night.
