From haunted bars to spooky cemeteries, Louisiana is no stranger to the paranormal. Nestled underneath canopies of ancient oaks lies a historic little bed and breakfasts that might just be one of the most beautiful spots in the state..but it's also one of the most haunted. Let's check it out.
Built in 1796, the Myrtles Plantation is a stunningly beautiful historic Creole cottage located in St. Francisville.
The original plantation was built by General David Bradford on 600 acres of land and was originally named "Laurel Grove."
Today, the Myrtles operates as a charming bed and breakfast while continuing to give tours.
And at night at this particular bed and breakfast might be one of the spookiest nights of your life.
The Myrtles Plantation is known as one of America’s most haunted homes.
The ghost stories have been swirling around this paranormal hotspot for years. Countless guests have reported paranormal experiences, previous owners of the plantation have had unexplainable events occur, and several paranormal teams have come to investigate the alleged hauntings.
While the plantation is rumored to be haunted by as many as twelve ghosts, the spirit of one particular ghost is by far the most well known.
As the legend goes, Chloe was a slave at the plantation a number of years ago. After being caught eavesdropping by the owners of the plantation, one of her ears was cut off as punishment. She wore a green turban around her head to cover up her wound.
In an act of revenge, Chloe baked a cake with poisonous oleander leaves in an attempt to kill Clark Woodruff, the owner of the plantation at the time.
Her plan backfired, and Clark’s wife and two daughters ended up dying from the poisonous cake. The other slaves then hanged her and threw her into the Mississippi River to escape punishment from Clark Woodruff.
If that wasn’t enough to spook you, the plantation is also rumored to be built over an Indian burial ground.
And the spirit of a young Native American woman has been reportedly seen on the grounds.
During your stay, you might just hear something staggering up the stairs.
Many believe that this is the spirit of William Drew Winter, who was murdered in the house and collapsed on the 17th stair trying to escape his murderer. It’s not uncommon to hear strange disembodied footsteps on the staircase.
