When a home that was built in the mid 19th century remains standing today, you know it is filled with stories. There are many properties in Kentucky that have seen several purposes throughout their lives, and many of these places are both incredibly interesting - and a little creepy. One such property can be found in Springfield and has been used for many things, but now stands as a popular bed and breakfast. Maple Hill Manor Bed and Breakfast is a historic and remote inn that has a history that is both fascinating and eerie, which makes it that much more appealing to visit.
Located in central Kentucky, right in the heart of the Bourbon Trail and horse country, Maple Hill Manor Bed and Breakfast is an award-winning inn with a colorful past.
This large, stately home was built around 1848 by Thomas Irvine McElroy as a wedding gift to his bride. As you wander the home and property today as a guest, you might agree that it may have been the best wedding gift in history, as the beauty of the property is overwhelming. The owners have wonderfully restored this home and welcome guests into 7 private rooms. They also run a llama/alpaca farm on the property and host events and weddings. The present use of the property today is intriguing enough, but it's the history of Maple Hill that adds to the fascination.
The beautiful farmland and rolling pastures that surround the bed and breakfast have actually seen quite a bit of turmoil throughout history.
The home was originally built as a plantation and then became a useful and important piece of history during the Civil War. Battles were fought on the lands surrounding the property and there are stories that the home was used as a Confederate Encampment and Union Field Hospital after the Battle of Perryville.
In 1862, the Battle of Perryville was fought near Maple Hill Manor and became the most destructive Civil War battle in the state, which left more than 7,600 killed, wounded, or missing.
The Manor was used as a Union Field Hospital after the battle, which was fought in the field shown above. This battle site is one of many historic sites near the B&B to visit during a stay.
Given its connections to this Civil War battle and that it was used as a hospital for the wounded, you can imagine there are a few eerie tales that have originated from this property.
As with most historic sites, it is rumored that Maple Hill is haunted by the ghosts of its past, mainly the original owners and the Civil War soldiers who perhaps lived their last hours in the home.
Stories of weird sounds, knocking on doors, and footsteps have been told, as well as experiencing odd feelings or dreams. Of course, these are haunted tales that could or could not be true, but given the history of the property, it does add to the fascination yet again.
In addition to these interesting pieces of the history of the Manor, the 7,000-square-foot home was also the birthplace and childhood home to Phil Simms, a former NY Giants Quarterback and Super Bowl XXI’s MVP. It was also a popular Dinner Hall, and a Foster Children’s Home to over 300 children.
A property that's seen this many lives is truly worthy of a visit to experience it all firsthand. The owners and innkeeper are passionate about the property and will warmly welcome you and share their stories of the Manor with you, as well. It will then be up to you to decide if the tales from Maple Hill Manor's past are purely fascinating, or also a little bit eerie.
