Sometimes you come across a place to stay that's just this side of crazy. It's unique, it's historic, and you've never seen anything like it. Well, this bed and breakfast is that place! As far as we know, it's the most unique bed and breakfast in America. Take a look!
Hidden in the Flint Hills, there used to sit a 78-foot-long Atlas E missile, topped with an atomic bomb.
These days, however, something else lives here. Well, someone.
This home is an underground missile launch complex, with a door built to withstand a nuclear blast.
Ed Peden and his wife Dianna were the first to turn a Cold War doomsday bunker like this into a liveable home.
How much did this place cost? It was built for about $4 million, but Ed bought it in 1982 at a measly $40,000 in comparison. However, it needed a lot of work.
Now we know it as Subterra Castle, and it's not your average hangout for knights of the round table.
Inside, there's a Great Room with instruments to play, places to lounge, and even a hot tub! Some of the rooms still house their original electronics, though they no longer work. You're encouraged to take a tour of the whole facility, by both the owners and myself. It's a truly unique experience, and you can be the first of your friends to step foot inside an old missile silo!
These two have turned this destructive bunker into a warm and cozy habitat. Are you ready to see inside?
I don't think you're ready.
Voilà! These bright colors and inviting scenes are a far cry from the once flooded and dirty concrete abyss. They've completely transformed this space into a New Age style common room.
