Camping is one of the best ways to receive a little fresh air, connect with nature, and get away from the monotony of daily life. While many Idahoans wait until summer to pull out their tents and sleep in the great outdoors, there are several year-round campgrounds in Idaho where you can have the ultimate outdoor experience. Fish Creek Campground is one of these year-round camping destinations. Tucked in the mountains outside of the small town of Grangeville, this year-round campground in Idaho is certainly worth checking out.
Fish Creek Campground is located outside of Grangeville. This area is home to the popular Fish Creek Pavilion, which features multiple grills, tables, and more. This pavilion is a day-use picnic area that can be reserved for up to 75 people.
While the Fish Creek Campground is available year-round, be aware that the roads to it may not be accessible due to snow. You’ll want to be mindful of the weather before heading on your camping adventure.
Despite the smaller size of this campground, you do not need to worry about making reservations. However, during the peak season, if you want a campsite, we suggest arriving at the campground early. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
This is quite a primitive campground. There are five pit toilets scattered around the campground and garbage services are not available — what you pack in, you must also pack out. However, it is tucked into the mountains so you are surrounded by trees and the entire area is gorgeous.
This campsite can be reserved for up to 75 people. However, it does not offer electricity, water, or sewer hookups.

Fish Creek Campground is the place to go to get away and enjoy nature. You can look for wildflowers, walk the path to the Fish Creek Pavilion, or even use the circular bonfire area.

The first thing to know about Fish Creek Campground is that it's small. With only ten sites available, there's a good chance you'll have the whole place to yourself, especially if you arrive during the quietest months — generally considered to be December through February. If you plan your getaway when there's snow on the ground, you'll also want to make sure you've got the right vehicle. The road to Fish Creek can be a doozy for smaller cars without chains or four-wheel drive.
Believe it or not, there are numerous ways to make tent camping comfortable with snow on the ground. Just stomp your patch down and pitch a winter-friendly tent. These tents use far stronger material than summer tents, allowing them to retain heat, withstand blustery winds, and wick away interior condensation. Still, if you're not up for the adventure, I'm a big fan of car camping! Even if you don't own a camper yourself, the explosion of camper van popularity means that there are plenty of outfitters who specialize in renting vehicles to folks wanting to enjoy some nature without the downsides.
Nestled in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, Fish Creek Campground has numerous opportunities for al fresco fun. Some local trails are maintained for skiing and snowshoeing. Make sure you've got an Idaho State Park N' Ski sticker for your car and take advantage of the winter wonderland during your visit.
Best of all — if you're a devoted dog parent like me — pooches are allowed at Fish Creek Campground! Keep in mind that not all breeds do well in cold conditions. If you've ever had experience with sled dogs, you'll know that even those hard-working canines use paw wax or even booties to prevent frostbite and cracked paw pads. Your pittie mix will need to bundle up if he's going to enjoy your excursion alongside you.
