One of the best things about the rural areas of the Peach State is the many opportunities we have to stargaze. Our cities are great, but when you're far from the urban lights, there are few things more magical than looking up at the infinite night sky and seeing all those magnificent stars up above you. One of our favorite places for admiring the night sky in Georgia is Stephen C. Foster State Park. This is an amazing part of the state: not only do you have unprecedented stargazing opportunities that are some of the best in the country, but you also can access the Okefenokee Swamp, one of the great natural wonders of Georgia.
Stephen C. Foster State Park was actually the first International Dark Sky Park to be designated in Georgia.
The title is given by the International Dark Sky Association and indicates that the park is undisturbed by urban lights, making it an ideal place to observe stars in the night sky. This place is truly remote, with the closest town about 18 miles away.
The secluded nature of the park can be a little off-putting at first: after all, we're all accustomed to reliable cell service and Wi-Fi! But the proximity to the incredible Okefenokee Swamp and immersion in nature will truly take you away from your worries.
There are several cottages available for rent that can house even the largest of families.
Want a little more of a back-to-nature experience than sleeping in a bed? There are plenty of tent sites for camping.
Lying outside looking at the constellations and then snuggling down into your tent sounds like the perfect ending for a relaxing day out in nature.
Make sure to book a boat tour in advance - this is one of the best places in the state to see alligators.
This is an amazing state park and one of the best places for stargazing in Georgia. A getaway here is a great way to get in touch with nature.
